WHAT TO BUILD

From Shark to Oliphaunt: An Epic Lord of the Rings Alternate Build

"Still only counts as one." — Gimli

The horns of Harad sound in the distance.

The ground begins to shake.

Then, emerging on the horizon, comes one of the most fearsome creatures ever seen in Middle-earth: the Mûmakil.

These legendary Oliphaunts were more than beasts of war. Towering above armies and carrying warriors into battle upon their backs, they became one of the most unforgettable sights in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Now, thanks to an ingenious alternate build by VaneStream, you can bring a piece of that epic battle to your LEGO® collection using only the pieces from LEGO® Creator Fierce Shark with a Treasure Chest (31381).

From Ocean Predator To Oliphaunt

At first glance, a shark and a Mûmakil seem worlds apart.

One rules the sea. The other marches across the plains of Middle-earth.

Yet using over 90% of the pieces from LEGO® Creator Fierce Shark with a Treasure Chest (31381), Vanestream has transformed the set into a highly detailed Oliphaunt complete with towering tusks, a poseable trunk and head, and a battle howdah ready to carry warriors into combat.

It's the perfect reminder that LEGO creativity knows no boundaries. Sometimes the most unexpected pieces can create something truly legendary.

A Worthy Opponent For Minas Tirith

What makes this build particularly special is how well it pairs with LEGO® Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith (11377).

While the Mûmakil is smaller than its movie counterpart, it was intentionally designed to complement the scale of Minas Tirith, creating a display that immediately captures the atmosphere of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Placed beside the White City, the model feels right at home, transforming a simple display into a scene straight out of Tolkien's world.

Suddenly, you're no longer looking at a LEGO set. You're witnessing the moment when the armies of Harad arrive at the gates of Gondor.

Small Set, Mighty Presence

Measuring approximately 21cm long, 11cm wide and 19cm tall, this alternate build packs an impressive amount of character into a relatively compact footprint.

The sturdy main body allows for confident display, while the detailed shaping captures the unmistakable silhouette of Tolkien's legendary war beast.

Cleverly scaled to match LEGO® Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith (11377), it allows fans to recreate the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in stunning detail.

Whether displayed charging into battle, standing guard outside Minas Tirith, or simply showcased on a shelf, it's a build that immediately draws attention.

And perhaps that's fitting. After all, Mûmakil were never meant to go unnoticed.

One Set, A Journey Beyond The Instructions

One of the joys of LEGO® building is discovering what lies beyond the official model.

Alternate builds challenge us to see familiar pieces differently, unlocking entirely new possibilities from the sets we already own.

This Mûmakil is a perfect example of that creativity in action.

What begins as a shark beneath the waves becomes an Oliphaunt crossing the plains of Middle-earth, proving that sometimes the greatest adventures start when we step beyond the instruction booklet.

The horns of Harad are sounding. Will your Mûmakil answer the call?
