WHAT TO BUILD

Rebuild the Big Screen: LEGO® Movie-Inspired Alternate Builds

If you’ve ever looked at your LEGO® sets and wondered, “What else can I turn this into?” this one’s for you.

Beyond the original builds, there’s a whole world of creativity waiting to be unlocked. With just a little imagination (and the right instructions), your existing bricks can transform into something completely unexpected… even iconic movie characters.

This week, we’re spotlighting three alternate builds inspired by the big screen, from a fan-favourite superhero universe to a sci-fi story that’s been gaining serious attention.

A Sci-Fi Star Reimagined: Rocky from Project Hail Mary

With the growing buzz around Project Hail Mary, one character has quietly captured the imagination of fans, Rocky.

Unlike your typical humanoid figure, Rocky is an alien with a completely unique form, which makes recreating him in LEGO form even more interesting.

Here, two alternate builds bring their own interpretation of this character:

A softer, friendlier take that captures Rocky’s personality and charm.

A more intense, creature-like version that leans into a “scary space monster” aesthetic.

Both builds are created by reworking parts from existing sets, LEGO® Creator Cute Bunny (31162) and LEGO® Marvel I am Groot (76217), proving that even complex, unconventional characters can come to life with the right approach.

It’s a great reminder that LEGO building isn’t just about following instructions, it’s about reimagining possibilities. “Amaze, Amaze, Amaze.”

A Fan Favourite Returns: Baby Groot

On the other end of the spectrum, we have a character that needs no introduction, Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Small, expressive, and instantly lovable, Groot has always been a favourite among fans. This alternate build takes LEGO® Creator Cute Animals: Playful Puppy Dog (31382) and transforms it into a compact version of the iconic character.

Despite its size, the build captures all the key details. The rounded head shape. The textured wood-like body. That signature cute and slightly mischievous expression.

It’s simple, charming, and incredibly display-worthy. The kind of build that makes you smile the moment you finish it.

The Art of the Brick

What makes these alternate builds so satisfying isn’t just how they look, it’s what they represent.

They show that:

  • You don’t always need new sets to create something new
  • Familiar bricks can become completely different characters
  • Creativity often comes from working within limits

Whether it’s turning a set into a sci-fi alien like Rocky or a beloved character like Groot, the process is what makes it fun.
