What is the International Space Station?
The International Space Station (ISS) is a habitable artificial satellite on the Earth's lower orbit. The world's top space agencies collaborated together to build this structure for experiments and research to be done in zero gravity.
It is a fantastic symbol for international collaboration and the most ambitious construction projects in the world. 2018 marked its 20th year anniversary of humans living in the ISS.
A long but fulfilling journey
This is a LEGO Ideas set which means that the original design was submitted by a LEGO fan in the hopes of making it an actual LEGO set for everyone to enjoy building.
LEGO Fan Designer Christopher Ruge originally designed a large scale ISS which reached the 10k support but unfortunately was not selected in the final review by The LEGO Group. He then designed a microscale version in the aim of the model being able to be placed on a desk for decoration. He reached the 10k support but once again did not manage to get selected in the final review.
In 2018, LEGO Ideas celebrated its 10-year anniversary. To commemorate this special event, the LEGO Ideas Team looked back at the many awesome submissions that were not fortunate enough to get chosen and thought of giving them a second chance. They gave LEGO fans the power to choose the design to be approved in order to ensure that the chosen set will cater to what LEGO fans love.
It was in this Special Review, that Christoph's design for the International Space Station was finally able to get the approval it deserves and the rest is history. Just like every scientist, engineer, and space explorer, Christoph has the passion and determination within him for doing what he loves!
An out-of-this-world achievement
LEGO Designers Sam and Corvin had a challenging task and making Christoph's design into actuality. How were they able to make a realistic model of this huge satellite floating in space?
The answer was through actual consultations with the engineers and scientist who built the real-life International Space Station!
The solar panels on the ISS are an iconic element that creates its silhouette. LEGO designers designed the LEGO version in a way that lets you rotate the panels as if it's following the rays of the sun just like its real-life counterpart.
The set also includes authentic details such as a posable Canadarm2, brick-built mini NASA space shuttle, and 3 mini cargo spacecrafts for you to get lost in space while building and playing.
