MOC TITLE: Taking Pictures at Singapore Places of Interest

Inspiration and Interesting Insights:

For the AFOL Challenge, I wanted to do a build that one can tell what or where it is at first look. I decided to build the Instaworthy Changi Jurassic Mile where Singaporeans love taking photos at the designated photo taking points.

After that, I started to brainstorm for more ideas on iconic local attractions. As I had only started building LEGO MOCs creatively last December, I knew that there will be many awesome submissions by the many expert AFOL builders in Singapore for this Challenge. My motivation to submit multiple entries was to hopefully inspire other amateur builders like myself to participate in this fun challenge.

All in all, I came up with 6 builds during the 1 month challenge, all of which were places of interest that my family and I had visited previously. The same 4 minifigs in all the 6 builds represent a family.

BUILDING TECHNIQUES AND TIPS

It is always a challenge to build MOCs with the limited LEGO pieces that we have but I do love the fun and challenge of it.

The challenge was to create the distinctive red and yellow body of the Brachiosaurus, otherwise it would be just any other dinosaur build, not representative of Changi Jurassic Mile. I alternated red "angled plate with bow" pieces with "normal plate with bow" yellow ones to create the effect.

I managed to create the effect of the outer columns widening towards the top, using normal brick with 1 knob pieces at the top and "headlight" pieces at the bottom which results in half a plate difference. The spiral staircase was made using 1x2 "jumpers", so cute!

The trunks of the coconut trees were bent slightly to resemble actual trees in real life.

I built a section of a glass tunnel against azure blue base plates to represent the iconic blue Shark Tunnel. The miniature manta ray, hammerhead shark, starfish, turtle and shipwreck were created with some NPUs.

VICTORIA CONCERT HALL

I shaved part of the 2 side wings, keeping just the main building, the clock tower and its foyer in order to fit the massive structure onto a 16x16 base plate. I used all the textured bricks we have to create the masonry Victorian effect.

DRAGON PLAYGROUND

I used 1x1 red tiles and quarter circles to create the tiled effect on the actual playground at Toa Payoh. "Arm with 2 clips" were used to make the sides of the ribbed body, and short rods, even icicles and bananas were used as the handle bars.

NATIONAL DAY PARADE AT THE FLOAT MARINA BAY

The display wordings "Stronger Together, Majulah!", this year's NDP theme, was created using LEGO DOTS, the crescent moon on the flag was created using a 4x4 red circle plate over 2x2 tile with bow and quarter tiles and the underside of the Chinook was achieved using inverted plate with bow pieces.

This build is my tribute to Singapore and hope that our yearly NDP with the flying of the national flag, the NDP performances and fireworks can be held smoothly year after year.
