Digital Play Innovations - LEGO Super Mario, Mindstorms and more

2020 marks the 25th year anniversary of LEGO Games. As The LEGO Group believes that the best is only good enough, we've seen endless innovations in the past year alone.

The introduction of LEGO Super Mario improved on the vision in combining physical play with digital play. But this is not the first time we've seen this as themes such as LEGO Mindstorms, and LEGO Technic's Powered Up app, now called Control+, have also introduced the same concept before.

Let's dive in to take a look at these Digital Play Innovations as we look forward to what more can be in store for us, LEGO fans in the coming year.

LEGO Super Mario

The announcement of the collaboration between Nintendo and The LEGO Group brought much excitement for fans of both brands across all ages. Not only are both brands iconic, but their promise to innovate has given them longevity where their fans continue to be engaged with their products and even share their passions with their offspring.

LEGO Super Mario has created a new way to play the beloved game. Players can now physically control Mario and even build their own game stages right at the fingertips.

From the get go, LEGO fans will notice that this product is different as there is now no physical instruction booklet included in these sets. Rather, they are asked to download the LEGO Super Mario app to begin their adventure. Once Mario is paired to a mobile device he comes to life, his classic phrases and even sound effects for the actions being done by the player for a full immersive play.

What's next for LEGO Super Mario? Well last month, The LEGO Group revealed next year's line-up with more expansion sets, more characters, and more power-up for LEGO Mario! Fans can expand their LEGO Super Mario world and test their gaming skills further with the LEGO Super Mario Master Your Adventure Maker set.

We're definitely excited for this build-it-yourself augmented reality game upgrade next year!

LEGO MINDSTORMS

LEGO coding was introduced to young inventors 7 years ago with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3. Its successor, the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor has given us the next generation of LEGO robots and upgraded features that make it more fun to play with! Coding is made easier for young children with the drag-and-drop coding language based on Scratch as well as Python to support those new to robotics.

LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor lets you build robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. Letting young inventors see their ideas come to life will cultivate their self-confidence to create more. Many robotic classes use this set to teach young children the basics of coding and it's no wonder as the set gives a world of unlimited play possibilities!

If you crave even more interaction and simpler platform, LEGO BOOST can be a great start for beginners. LEGO BOOST Creative Toolbox and LEGO BOOST Star Wars Droid Commander have more visual effects especially for young jedi's.

LEGO Technic CONTROL+

We started with LEGO Power Functions which introduced the ability of making LEGO Technic builds and even LEGO trains come into life. The LEGO Powered Up then allowed builders and young aspiring engineers the ability to control their builds as well as get a better understanding of the mechanics of machines.

Now, LEGO CONTROL+ presents a polished look with realistic dashboards that even adult gearheads have enjoyed. There is also an achievements system within the app which adds fuel for gearheads to accomplish to discover more features!

Learn Through Play

These digital play innovations are not only for entertainment but also help 21st century children gain STEM skills.
