LEGO® MINIFIGURE OF THE MONTH July 2021 | Shang-chi Marvel's First Asian Superhero
A journey to preserve a family legacy
"Shang Chi is more than just a movie – it is a celebration of our culture and a rallying cry for the forgotten, the unseen, and the overlooked. It is a reminder to take up space, to stand tall, and to be unapologetically ourselves” - Simu Liu, star of Marvel's Shang Chi
Who is Shang-Chi?
Shang was raised to become a deadly assassin by his father, the immortal crime lord and sorcerer known as The Mandarin. However, Shang-Chi became aware of his father's evil nature and defected after his first assignment.
The Mandarin may sound familiar to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans as he and his Ten Rings Organization have had conflicts with Tony Stark. Though we never had the chance to meet the real Mandarin as we only ever met the false Mandarin they have implanted before.
What is the Legend of the Ten Rings?
Legend has it that the Mandarin, Shang-chi's father, found the Ten Rings in the Valley of Spirits, a sacred place that became the crash site of a spaceship from the planet Maklu IV. In the wreckage of the craft, the Mandarin found his Ten Rings of Power, each of which imbued him with a different ability.
In actuality, they weren't rings at all, but receptacles for the souls of fallen Makluan (giant dragons) heroes, ferried to Earth by a Makluan explorer named Axon-Karr, who begged the Mandarin not to take them. Sensing their power, the Mandarin let Axon-Karr die and took the rings. But the Makluan souls inside soon began to corrupt him, setting him on a conquest to take over Earth in their name, and resurrect them as its rulers.
