LEGO® Star Wars™ R2-D2™ and C-3PO™: Then vs. Now – The Ultimate Droid Display!
Let’s take a trip down memory lane, back to 2000s, when LEGO® fans first got their hands on buildable versions of our favorite Star Wars™ droids: R2-D2 and C-3PO. Fast forward to today, and these two are still rocking the LEGO world—only this time, with some major upgrades. Whether you’ve been a fan since day one or you’re just jumping on the Star Wars train, let’s dive into how these droids have evolved and why they look awesome side by side!
Back in 2000s, LEGO® launched the Technic versions of these droids—R2-D2 (8009) and C-3PO (8007). These were something else at the time! R2-D2’s head could turn in different directions, his front leg helped him balance, and a lever on his back revealed a hidden tool mechanism. C-3PO, with his 341 pieces, had a rotating head, bendable arms and fingers, and opening panels that revealed some fun internal details. Their design was unmistakably mechanical, with all the exposed gears giving them that classic Technic feel.
Fast forward to today, and LEGO has really leveled up with their new, more detailed versions of these iconic droids: LEGO® Star Wars™ R2-D2 (75379) and C-3PO (75398). These new sets not only add more pieces—1,050 for R2-D2 and 1,138 for C-3PO—but they also bring in incredible movie-accuracy and display-ready features. The modern R2-D2 still comes with his rotating head and retractable third leg, but he’s much sleeker and comes with even more of his recognizable tools. Meanwhile, C-3PO now shines with a golden finish, and his poseable limbs capture the character's iconic mannerisms perfectly. And yes, you can totally recreate his classic “Oh dear!” poses from the movies!
Now, here’s where things get fun: displaying them together! If you’ve been collecting since 2001, you probably remember how awesome it was to have the original R2-D2 (8009) and C-3PO (8007) versions of these droids displayed side by side. Now imagine adding the new LEGO® Star Wars™ R2-D2™ (75379) and C-3PO™ (75398) sets into the mix—it’s the ultimate then vs. now comparison. The older Technic models had that rugged, mechanical look, while today’s versions are all about smooth, polished details that make them look like they stepped right out of the movies. Displaying them together on the same shelf is like showcasing LEGO’s evolution, from those classic Technic builds to today’s modern, detailed designs.
The best part is, you don’t have to choose between the two eras! Whether you’re nostalgic for the original sets or obsessed with the new ones, having both on display tells the full story of how far LEGO has come. Plus, both sets come with special anniversary minifigures and plaques, making them perfect collector’s items. Whether you’re all about the throwback Technic builds or you’re loving the new movie-accurate designs, R2-D2 and C-3PO are a must-have for any Star Wars or LEGO fan. So, how will you display them—old and new together, or just the latest and greatest? Either way, these iconic droids deserve a spot on your shelf, and your collection will be all the better for it!
