Rediscovering LEGO® Art: Nathan Sawaya's Inspiring Journey

The Art of the Brick is a world-renowned exhibition featuring stunning sculptures and large-scale artworks made entirely from LEGO® bricks. Created by artist Nathan Sawaya, this exhibit combines creativity and innovation, turning the iconic toy into an art medium. From human figures to intricate architectural models, The Art of the Brick has inspired millions of visitors across the globe.

In December 2012, we had the pleasure of interviewing Nathan Sawaya himself during the Southeast Asian debut of The Art of the Brick at Singapore’s ArtScience Museum. Nathan reminisced about his first LEGO sculpture, a dog he affectionately named "Boxer," which he built after his parents said no to getting a real pet. This moment was a turning point, revealing to him that he could create anything with LEGO bricks.

Initially, Nathan worked as a corporate attorney in New York City, but he craved a creative outlet. After posting his LEGO sculptures online, he quickly realized there was a demand for his art, prompting him to consider turning his passion into a full-time career.

When asked why he chose Singapore for his first Southeast Asian exhibition, Nathan expressed his excitement about the city’s vibrant culture and stunning architecture. He even built a LEGO replica of the ArtScience Museum specifically for the exhibit.

One fascinating aspect of Nathan's work is how it resonates differently with audiences; his well-known piece “Yellow,” which shows a figure opening up to reveal a cascade of LEGO bricks, can evoke deep emotional responses in adults while children often see it simply as a cool sculpture.

When it comes to his favorite LEGO brick, Nathan chose the classic 1x2 plate, praising its versatility and usefulness in countless builds.
